As you may have gathered from my previous post, Yea Yea Photography now has a studio space! We’ve teamed up with Dori Elizabeth Photography to snag a sweet little studio space in the Historic Co-Op Plaza of downtown Fairbanks. It’s just the right amount of room we need for a rotating studio space / office, and separate client seating. It worked well during our Grand Opening Event, where we had a Photo Booth set up in the corner office.
Check out our adorable sign. Dori is the multi-talented Artist behind it. She crafted it by hand!
We are currently operating on an appointment only basis, but may open up one day or one weekend per month for walk-in clients.
All of our furniture is refinished, repurposed, or otherwise second hand. Our benches were scores (if you want to call them that) from Craigslist. They were in awful condition before we stripped the fabric, sanded off the mildew, and applied a new coat of paint. Our friend over at Jax Harmon Photography and Designs is a whiz of a seamstress; she taught us how to create basic patterns from furniture pieces and sew up new upholstery covers. I was a diligent listener to her tutorial, but I know if I were to attempt a project like that again, I’d call her immediately. The Shibori throw pillows were also Jax’s doing — what a friend! Dori, Jax and I all got together a month or so ago to have a Shibori dyeing party. It was really rewarding to bring some of the hand dyed fabric into our studio space.
Our desk is the same writing desk I used in college – previously painted a monochrome silver back when that was all the rage. It houses office supplies, naturally.
Have I mentioned how lucky Dori and I are to have supportive Husbands? A couple of nights before our Grand Opening, we impulsively decided that the dated carpet running throughout the studio just wouldn’t cut it, aesthetically. Least of all in the client seating area. We pulled the trigger on a laminate flooring install, which took our guys one evening to do. They worked well into the night to get it done, doing an exceptional job! It doubles as a newborn backdrop as well, bonus!
Fairbanks has a rich tradition for the Art community called First Friday. The First Friday of the month, small businesses and galleries around town showcase the art of local artists. We’re proud to be one of the town’s newest participants!
Our first Artist featured is Laura Hughes, a graduate of the Kansas City Art Institute. She has a diverse portfolio; the textile art and the water color portraits in this blog post are all her work. I’m the proud owner of one of her pieces — a portrait of my son Woodrow in a ring sling. It was gifted to me on my son’s first birthday – and it took all the self control I could muster to not mewl and cry when I unwrapped it. It’s a truly gorgeous piece. I’ll treasure it forever.
If you’d like to commission her for a water color portrait, shoot me an email and I’ll get you in touch!
We have a mini fridge. I feel compelled to bluntly mention that. We also have a coffee maker to keep our clients caffeinated while in the studio. Creature comforts!
There’s also a great view of 2nd Avenue & Downtown Fairbanks right outside our second story window. Most days you’ll see tourists pacing the streets below with cameras dangling from their necks. They often stop to point their lenses up to our building. It’s a really exquisite old theatre built in 1925 that was converted into a cooperative of shops in 1961. The exterior retains much of its Pioneer charm.
Our Grand Opening Event was an exciting launch for us. We hosted a Photo Booth and handed out souvenir prints to our guests who participated in the festivities. It’s a tradition we may have to maintain: it was such a joy to see the brightened faces of friends and clients when we handed them their one-of-a-kind prints.
We are truly elated to offer Studio Services to the Fairbanks North Star Borough! For more information on Studio Services, please visit the Investment Page. You can also contact me using the contact form on the home page.
And many thanks to all the friends, family and clients who supported our expansion efforts! We hope to see you all in our studio often!
